http://www.exoduster.com/may05_reviews.html This is easily the best local release of the year! This debut recording – actually is five songs – from Austin-based Wendy Mitchell and Lynn Boland is about as brilliant as bunch of folks just kicking it in the South could do. In such southern university haunts, like Chapel Hill, Athens and Austin, the Casting Couch are likely to become celebs. (Grade: B+/A-) 05/2005
| http://www.austinchronicle.com/issues/dispatch/2005-04-29/music_phases11.html Texas Platters: deEP End There's no better way to summarize the sonic steal that is 5 Songs from the Casting Couch . Patched together by government employees, students, and a few transplants from Athens, Ga., this fivepiece could become one of Austin's most exciting new bands. Imagine what South Congress would sound like if Liz Phair had settled in, and that begins to paint the Casting Couch picture. Alt.country and college-grrrl pop fuse themselves in a splendid way, songs like "Flying Machine" and "Copper Girl" bound for greatness. -Matt Dentler 04/29/05
| http://www.beattheindiedrum.com/reviews/castingcouch.htm If Athens, Georgia and Austin, Texas had a drunken love affair it might sound something like The Casting Couch. The band's self-described indie rock meets alt-country sound is reminiscent of bands like Wilco and The Jayhawks, and The Sixth Great Lake, an Elephant 6 band who also married the indie pop sound with country and folk. ... My favorite track is the closing 'Whiskey Skiffle', a honky tonk lament about a broken relationship, that manages to be simultaneously funny and depressing. Complete with a group sing-a-long chorus, it would serve as a nice soundtrack to taking shots to drown your sorrow or for nursing a hangover the following morning. ... -Valerie C. 7/2/05 |
