Reviewer: Paddy Leitsch

For those of you who are unsure about what I am talking about in this review, just think Brian Eno meets Dave Gilmour. But everyone else, dig this: If you ever listened to an album and wondered what those outro jams and segues dropped in the middle of songs would sound like if fully developed, this is it. This is a palette cleansing for those jaded on the rotting sugar of today's pop and roll. It sounds like a Zen stairwell leading to an enigma in your brain. This, like many other indie works, defies any current description, but it has an urgency and consequence that will prove a most relevant seed in many genres to come. It is subtle and overtly warm like emo (without the whine-fest, or any vocals for that matter), endearingly spiritual like a good spacey new age song, reverby like a canyon of stoner melodrama, and as exposed as the landscape of daybreak in mid June. If you wish to step into another human's moment of spiritual transcendence, definitely pick... Read entire review »

Review by Dene Bebbington at Wind and Wire

The shortest album ever to come my way, A Thousand Years is a real gem and an example of good things coming in a small package. Greg was spurred on to complete the music after a family bereavement, so not surprisingly the album is themed towards the subject of death, and though it's an example of hard ambient music the emotional tone is both mournful and hopeful. Clocking in at less than twenty-four minutes the seven tracks are therefore all short at less than five minutes each. Greg previously played guitar in a hard rock band, and so there is a slight rock music feel at times when the electric guitar gets lively and drums are used (albeit in a generally restrained manner). The first, and also shortest, track "Into the Woods" is perhaps the darkest as it has a sense of foreboding that comes from entering the unknown, but then the mood lifts in "Land of the Living" where mild... To be hailed as a "poor man's something" is the most ineffectual kind of compliment -- one implying both a resemblance to something great, yet at the same time a failure to reach the mark set by the standard holder. That said, it is with the most kindness that somewhere between my fourth and fifth listen to Alexandria, VA native A Thousand Years' debut recording of the same name, I found it hard not to dub them the poor man's Air. Sonically, A Thousand Years resembles most closely the work of Air's ethereal Motion Picture Score for The Virgin Suicides both in sound and theme. Haunting, gossamer and purely instrumental, it seems cut from the same cloth as the 2000 release, except slightly less. Presumably recorded on a budget somewhat smaller than the acclaimed French band has to work with, A Thousand Years boasts a smaller range of instrumentation, but makes ample use of its resources at hand. The production... Read entire review »
