Brief Description A rarefied mixture of progressive, power, death and gothic metal fusing interests and influences from diverse backgrounds on professional levels of technical skill. This project features a variety of real and synthesised instruments and involves artists with a variety of involvement and contribution.
History/Biography Formed in 1996 by Stephan Thaark and Chris Paynter, the group is progeny of MP3.com with more than 6,500 downlaods in three years, a remarkable achievement for the slow, natural, unhurried but definetely optimised efforts of the project. The name of the project, ...of Shadows, describes the nature of it's participants. Most members contribute to a limited number of compositions, although longer participating members do exist.
This all started on a clear, icy May morning in 1997 when Stephan Thaark and Chris Paynter gazed over the southern seas of England after a long night of alcohol, stories and music. That night, the first composition, a composition following conventional songwriting guidelines known as "Gift of Dreams" was created. Following the departure of Chris Paynter to Spain later that year, Stephan Thaark continued the songwriting process over the following years, formulating the future nature of the project. "Damnation Romance" is a classical example of the direction the music follow afterards. Upon the closure of Mp3.com. the main exposure avenue for ...of Shadows, "Damnation Romance" dominated 73% of the downloads, followed by "Gift of Dreams" at 19%.
The attention of other musicians with a variety of training backgrounds was attracted by this new driection, and a number of potential set offs where attempted. The complicated nature of composition, enorchestration and arrangement impacted significantly on the output of the band. Although a number of pieces were ready for studio recording, the trans-European nature of the participating members precluded completion and mixing to the necessary level of quality.
The recent move of Stephan Thaark to London and his introduction to the local prolific metal and more music scene has re-ignited interest and work. Negotiations with new members are currently under way and it is expected that within the next few months new songs will be released. |
