Brief Description Encyclopedia Brown is all about simple, uncluttered, warm music, recorded live to tape on 1/4 inch reels, splice edits and ambient noise included. Despite their bittersweet nature, EB songs are always embracing. A hug always beats a punch in the face, after all.
History/Biography Panhandling for guitar strings was no way to make a living in Ypsilanti, Michigan. After swimming from the US in the early 90s, EB founder N. Francis Doyle formed the seminal unknown punk/electronica/folk/country/polka outfit Mozzie Coil and was met with instant ambivalence. Their first recording "Easy Listening (at Gunpoint)" was remembered for its mish mash of styles and holds the unique distinction of selling absolutely no copies. Success came in 2001 with the release of the more cohesive "...in Glistening Mono". A much heralded gig at the Alley Bar in Milton in February 2004 looked to have cemented the Mozzie Coil marque in the public's consciousness, but life was not all roses and vivisection. The one man operation split acrimoniously in March after Doyle fell out with himself over creative differences. In May, he unveiled Encyclopedia Brown, a new direction in music. Following some personnel issues, Doyle ended up alone again, leftily doodling away on his poor lefty guitar with the strings done up for a righty (Albert King-style). The new music came to an abrupt end in June 2005 when Doyle followed another passion, theatre. He's appeared in a few films and many stage plays over the last 18 months and hopes to continue this in 2007, as well as to fulfil a long-held but undelivered promise to record some more songs. |
