Amid the purely intellectual tonal experiments that dominate the field of modern music today, Rami Bar-Niv reminds us that jazz and ragtime can be important elements in contemporary art music. Although Gershwin and Joplin succeeded in breaking some of the cultural barriers that had kept American music out of the world's high-brow concert halls, Bar-Niv picks up where they left off. Perhaps it takes a foreign born, highly accomplished musician to champion the cause of American music in the international arena. Were they alive today, Scott and George could not have appointed a finer ambassador than Rami Bar-Niv. |
